Chapter 23

It was midnight in Prague, rainy, and the downtown club district was packed with young people in designer clothes. The city bustled with an almost dangerous kind of energy. The murmur of a bass-heavy techno song pounded through the streets, almost making the cement on the sidewalk shake and the windows of nearby restaurants rattle.

Sierra White was dressed in a black sequinned dress and had on high heels. Her red hair was lush and pushed up, in a style similar to that of Jane Fonda in Barbarella. She wore red lipstick and had on dark eyeliner. Luke Slate was dressed in jeans, wore a sports jacket, and had his blonde hair slicked back. Yet, despite their flashiness, the two of them didn't stand out. Everyone in the club district was dressed up in a similar fashion.

The two undercover CIA operatives walked down the strip toward the club where they were to meet the defector. Slate had his arm around Sierra. She didn't mind it. It was her idea. She wanted them to look comfortable together. The less attention they got, the better.

They needed to get to The Cat's Eyes—a jazz bar that overlooked the Vltava river. It was supposed to be a quiet little place, out of the way, but based on every bar that they passed, Sierra was beginning to doubt the integrity of the intel. The bar seemed to be the most happening place of the whole city.

"What do you think?" Luke said to her. "You ever been on an assignment like this?"

"No," Sierra said.

"This is exactly what I've been looking for," he whispered in her ear. "I want the excitement. I want the fear. Maybe later, we can play out our roles with a little more enthusiasm."

Sierra looked up at Slate and saw a broad smile on his face. "We're just here to pick up the defector and bring him back. Get your head out of the gutter."

"We could have some fun if we wanted to."

"Fun? Just focus on the mission," Sierra said, rolling her eyes.

"I joined the CIA for excitement. I'm finally getting it."

"You sound like an overexcited teenager," Sierra said. "Let's just get to the club, find our guy, and leave."

"You're no fun; you know that. No wonder you don't have any friends in Langley."

"Shut up."

"Don't be bitchy. I'm just telling you the truth." He laughed.

"You're an ass."

"I know."

They walked for a couple more minutes. Sierra did her best to keep her temper in line. She knew that Slate was looking at every girl in a miniskirt that he passed and ogling her. But then, they finally saw it. The Cat's Eyes. The club's sign was bright neon red and made Sierra feel at ease.

"Saved by the club," Sierra said. "I don't think I could take much of your antics. You keep this up, and I'll make sure I never work an assignment with you again."

"Ah, calm down, sweetheart," Slate said while winking at her.

The two of them walked up to the entrance of the club.
